From the outside looking in， I live a charmed life: hockey legend for a father， my own promising future in the league， a great family， awesome friends。 It’s not untrue， but it’s not quite that simple either。
My dad’s advice has always been to make hockey my number-one priority—at least until I make it to the pros。 So， going into my senior year of college， I have a plan。 I’ll put in the effort required to pass my classes， play hockey like my life depends on it， and avoid relationships。 All I have to do is stay focused on the end game， and I’ll walk away with a degree and into a career in the NHL。

After reading Little Lies I wasn’t sure how Helena could top it but there shouldn’t have been any doubts。 Maverick’s story is just emotional as Lavender’s。 This story was full of raw emotion and heart and quite the journey。 Helena weaved a story that will pull on those heartstrings one minute and make you chuckle in the next。 It will give you all the feels and more。 I absolutely loved Clover and Maverick and everything about this story。 I cannot wait for more of this second generation。

I was terrified of this book wrecking me， so I took it super slow， and what a payout！！This book is absolutely beautifully done， such a gentle hold on trauma responses， mental health， survivor guilt。。And THE SPICE！ Honestly， it was absolutely a natural flow into the book。 She has done it again， proven why I *always* trust this woman with my heart/eyeballs/earballs （I haven’t listened yet but she also gets the best narrators）

Where to start。 I loved Mavericks character when we first see him in Little Lies。 He is a great older brother and friend。 When he was younger， things happened to his sister Lavender and he has felt like it was his fault all these years。 Because of this， he seems to have become an old soul。 He is in his last year of college and looking to go into the NHL next year。 He is stressed he won’t be able to live up to his dad’s legendary status。 In small ways he has started to pull away from his best fri Where to start。 I loved Mavericks character when we first see him in Little Lies。 He is a great older brother and friend。 When he was younger， things happened to his sister Lavender and he has felt like it was his fault all these years。 Because of this， he seems to have become an old soul。 He is in his last year of college and looking to go into the NHL next year。 He is stressed he won’t be able to live up to his dad’s legendary status。 In small ways he has started to pull away from his best friend Kody since he has started dating his sister though Maverick loves that the two of them are together。 Maverick and Clover have a very interesting meet cute and then end up hooking up for the night。 When he ends up in a class that she is filling in for the teacher， things become a little more complicated。 The two aren’t exactly sure how to act with each other at first。 Maverick is focused on getting his career and Clover doesn’t want to look bad being with a younger guy/student。 But these two have such great chemistry and are so good for each other。 Clover unfortunately has an ex that wants to fix things but she is a no go for that。 I definitely cried in parts when Maverick talks about what happened when he was a child and when him and father really get to talk。 I loved seeing him heal little by little by just talking to his family and friends along with Clover。 And I don’t want to give anything away because it was all such a fantastic read I will just say the last few chapters were the best for me。 Loved it and plan to re read again soon！ 。。。more

This book had all the emotional impact of Little Lies but mixed with humor from Pucked。 Maverick is definitely Violet’s son and the word vomit had me laughing out loud more than once。 I loved Maverick and Clover so much。 Maverick is so protective and holds so much baggage that I never would’ve guessed at if Helena hadn’t let us into his head。 Clover is just what he needed and she needed him just as badly。 This book was a perfect balance of angst and humor and I already can’t wait to reread it。

Romance and MoreBoy I didn't realize until I was choosing the shelves for this book， how many different genres it covers。 We have a hockey player， in a small town， with some heavy personal baggage he needs to get over， oh and he slept with his college professor over the summer without realizing it。 Whew！！All of that said， it made for an interesting read。 Maverick and Clover had chemistry from the get go and it only got stronger throughout the book。 I wasn't too sure about Clover at first， she de Romance and MoreBoy I didn't realize until I was choosing the shelves for this book， how many different genres it covers。 We have a hockey player， in a small town， with some heavy personal baggage he needs to get over， oh and he slept with his college professor over the summer without realizing it。 Whew！！All of that said， it made for an interesting read。 Maverick and Clover had chemistry from the get go and it only got stronger throughout the book。 I wasn't too sure about Clover at first， she definately had to grow on me。 Maverick was a different story。 I liked his character instantly。 He was written so genuine， always thinking of others， however the reason for that personality trait was on the dark side。As the blurb says， Maverick and Clover of course meet before knowing about the student/teacher relationship， so suprise suprise when he shows up in her classroom at the begining of the semester and the dance begins。 Like most student/teacher books， we are constantly waiting for that other shoe of them getting caught to drop。 There is quite a bit of drama for both characters in the background to make this an intense read all the way around。The book is well written and sexy as all get out。 While it felt draggy mid-read， I enjoyed meeting Maverick's family and friends along the way。 They were the touch of humor the story needed and seemed pretty interesting in their own right。 Bitter Sweet Heart reads well as a stand alone and felt like a great addition to the series。 Reviewed for Renee Entress's Blog 。。。more

Wow。 Just wow。 I couldn’t put this story down。 Now that I have I have such an array of emotions。 I laughed， I cried， I cried more。 The story was excellent and obviously you need to read Lavender and Kody’s story too and well all of Helena’s books。 Please just read the book！

Little did we know when Alex Waters slammed into the boards and startled the reading Violet at a hockey game that all these years later， we would be losing our hearts to their second son Mav。 As readers of romance， we believe our heroes and heroines will live the HEA; the Waters family did not， and reading the story of how that trauma has and is manifesting in their lives while being part of a family like the Waters makes for divine reading。 This story centers on Maverick， the second oldest son Little did we know when Alex Waters slammed into the boards and startled the reading Violet at a hockey game that all these years later， we would be losing our hearts to their second son Mav。 As readers of romance， we believe our heroes and heroines will live the HEA; the Waters family did not， and reading the story of how that trauma has and is manifesting in their lives while being part of a family like the Waters makes for divine reading。 This story centers on Maverick， the second oldest son with the old soul。 Most families have that child who is born with an old soul， but I believe the trauma aged Mav's soul and turned him into a protector， caregiver， and tender of all the people around him， the everyman for those he cares for。 Along with this are his purpose-driven goals of being like his dad and becoming a professional hockey player。 Early in this book， we discover that that does not seem to be where his passion lies。 He's not driven for hockey like his dad or even his best friend， Kody。 As I said， this conflicts with the things he seems to derive the most joy from helping others in various ways。 As he's entered his senior year， he's discovered a passionate interlude with a woman who has resurfaced with her as his teacher。Clover is temporarily filling a position at the University and fighting her attraction to the younger student。 Also， she deals with a highly possessive and creepily persistent ex who will not sign the divorce papers。 The blending of Mav and Clover is fraught with problems， but the love and understanding that grows between these two gentle souls are beautiful。The book is tender， angsty， and filled with the love of the Waters family as they deal with the trauma all these years later and the impact it has had on their family。 Alex makes quite the patriarch， and their quirky family dynamics continue to make me smile。 I so love seeing the extended hockey family all living near each other and watching their children grow。 I honestly don't think Helena Hunting can write a bad book。 Maverick and Clover will leave you smiling。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 This was an enjoyable read。 Bitter Sweet Heart is book two in the Lies， Hearts and Truths series and is Maverick Waters's book。 Maverick is the brother of Lavender， from book one， and the son of Alex and Violet from Pucked。 He is a senior in college and plays on the hockey team with plans to play in the NHL after he graduates。 But on the inside， he is going through some emotional turmoil。 He is dealing with his sister and his best friend finally becoming a couple， which finds him grow 3。5 stars。 This was an enjoyable read。 Bitter Sweet Heart is book two in the Lies， Hearts and Truths series and is Maverick Waters's book。 Maverick is the brother of Lavender， from book one， and the son of Alex and Violet from Pucked。 He is a senior in college and plays on the hockey team with plans to play in the NHL after he graduates。 But on the inside， he is going through some emotional turmoil。 He is dealing with his sister and his best friend finally becoming a couple， which finds him growing further away from them， and his own trauma surrounding their childhood and his sister's kidnapping。 He is unsure about what he really wants to do with his career and to make matters more complicated， he finds that his new professor turns out to be his summer hookup。 Clover is a visiting professor， teaching creative writing for a year， on hiatus from her job as a librarian to fill in for a professor on leave。 She is also going through an emotional time， separated （and still being harrassed） from an abusive ex who refuses to grant her the divorce she has wanted for years。 Clover and Maverick are both shook by their new circumstances but they can't stop their attraction to each other。 They both have so much on the line but are they willing to risk it all for the chance to be together？ This was a pretty good story， although a little slow at times。 I liked Maverick and Clover as characters。 I think their age difference was a lot for me to overcome mentally。 Mav was 21 and Clover was 30。 It could just be a "me" thing， but I had a hard time feeling their connection and chemistry。 I never felt them letting down their guard and having fun together。 But I liked them overall and found the book entertaining still。 I was glad they didn't have any big blow ups or misunderstandings late in the book as well。 Overall， Bitter Sweet Heart was an angsty， enjoyable read。 I didn't quite like it as much as book one in the series。 But I am liking this series in general and look forward to more from it and H。 Hunting in the future！ *arc provided in exchange for an honest review* 。。。more

An angsty and emotional reverse age gap and， after the initial hook up， bit of a slow burn romance from Helena Hunting。 I’m used to laughing out loud from reading her books but Bitter Sweet Lies featuring the next generation from the Pucked series is a whole new level of writing as Maverick， the middle son of Alex and Violet Rivers， navigates his final year of college before following his father’s ice skates into the NHL。 I love how this author has shown that all the wealth and privilege in the An angsty and emotional reverse age gap and， after the initial hook up， bit of a slow burn romance from Helena Hunting。 I’m used to laughing out loud from reading her books but Bitter Sweet Lies featuring the next generation from the Pucked series is a whole new level of writing as Maverick， the middle son of Alex and Violet Rivers， navigates his final year of college before following his father’s ice skates into the NHL。 I love how this author has shown that all the wealth and privilege in the world won’t protect your children from experiencing emotional issues。 Maverick has always been the protector in his family especially after his sister’s abduction when she was young。 He’s carried the guilt of that event ever since and it’s now affecting his day to day life， acerbated by his fears of not being good enough and living up to the legend that is his father all while falling in love with an older woman who just happens to be his professor。 I’m not usually a fan of reverse age gap romances。 There’s always been something a bit icky for me when its older woman/younger man – a bit of a double standard I know as I wouldn’t even notice if it was the other way around but at least I’m honest about it。 Here though the reverse factor doesn’t seem to bother me。 It’s barely nine years and past events have left Maverick with an air of maturity beyond his years。 I also loved the subplot with Clover’s ex。This book was a joy to read， not only for the fantastic story telling but because we get to catch up with the Waters family where maturity hasn’t changed Violet one iota except in making her one overprotective mama bear when it comes to her children。 She still has no filter when it comes to embarrassing her long suffering husband and kids and I love seeing their family dynamics at work。 Hopefully this isn’t the last we hear of the next generation and we’ll get BJ’s story soon。 。。。more
